Djibouti Port to invite bids for Doraleh Container Terminal expansion

(HornTrade) – $300 million project will double Doraleh’s capacity to 3 million TEU

The Port of Djibouti, a major port in the Gulf of Aden, will look to invite bids for the expansion of the Doraleh Container Terminal, partly-owned by DP World, in the fourth quarter, according to the Port and Free Zone Authority.

The terminal’s annual capacity will be doubled to around 3 million TEU following the completion of a US$300 million development project in 2015, Aboubaker Omar Hadi, chief executive officer of the authority, told Bloomberg. Read the rest of this entry »

South Sudan to Get Oil Out With Trucks

(HornTrade) – South Sudan is planning to export by road at least 10% of its 350,000 barrels-a-day crude oil production while alternative infrastructure is put in place, said Stephen Dhieu Dau, minister for petroleum and mining, without giving a time frame for when this would start.

The landlocked country, which sells its crude to refiners in China and Malaysia, has shut down its entire oil output amid a dispute with neighboring Sudan over oil-export transit fees, a move that has contributed to global oil prices in recent days hitting highs last seen in July 2008. Lamu Port: Kenya’s new port to be gateway to Great Lakes region

(Horntrade) – The construction of Lamu Port in Kenya has been officially launched by Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. The Port is expected to act as the main gateway to Africa’s Great Lakes region that includes the Horn of Africa, eastern Africa and central Africa.

The inauguration of the port project also marked the launch of the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport Project (Lapsset). This project will see the creation of a superhighway that will link Kenya and Ethiopia. Read the rest of this entry »

PetroTrans negotiates to extend Somaliland port

(HornTrade) – PetroTrans, a Chinese oil and gas producer could conclude preliminary negotiations with Somaliland for the extension of the key port of Berbera by the end of this year, but has scrapped plans to build a liquefied natural gas facility.

Philip Hirschler, a legal adviser for PetroTrans, said from London the firm planned to extend Berbera port’s container and mineral export services following an agreement it signed with the government of the breakaway enclave of Somalia last August. Read the rest of this entry »

Ethiopia seeks India’s financial muscle for its rail project

(Horntrade) – Ethiopia wants $300 million more from India for an ambitious railway project that would connect it with neighbouring Djibouti, a venture that India backs as part of its “support for regional integration in Africa”.

India has already inked a loan agreement worth $300 million for the railway project. However, the loan from New Delhi is yet to be disbursed.
